Parched, video installation (11:08 min), Art Rotterdam, 2025, photos by Tommy Smits
Parched is built as an ecological detective story. A camera moves through a damaged landscape: broken branches, dried-out leaves, a detective searching for clues. But where is the victim? And is the detective truly innocent?
The installation draws on an essay by Timothy Morton, in which the philosopher compares ecological awareness to film noir. In this genre, the detective is rarely an innocent outsider, they are implicated in the case through shadowy means. Parched invites the viewer to reflect on guilt, shame, perpetrator and victim in the relationship between humans and nature.
The work layers animated drypoint etchings with filmed footage of a miniature landscape, which is also present in the installation space itself.
